Everybody in the Springs gets a rock chip sooner or later
It isn't bad luck. It's the roads. CDOT puts sand down on I-25 and Ute Pass every time it snows, and that stuff sits on the shoulders of Powers and Woodmen until the wind blows it back into traffic. Add the gravel trucks on Highway 85, the dirt roads out in Black Forest and Peyton, and a couple of hailstorms every summer, and this is a rough place to own a windshield.
The good news is most chips can be fixed if you get to them early. A repair takes about half an hour, costs a fraction of a new windshield, and a lot of insurance policies pay for it completely.
So if you've got a chip, don't sit on it. Put a piece of clear tape over it to keep the dirt and water out, and give us a call.

Rock chip repair
About half an hour, and it keeps a chip from turning into a crack. Insurance often covers the whole thing.
Windshield replacement
For cracks that are too long, too close to the edge, or right in front of you.
Camera recalibration
If your car has lane assist or auto braking, the camera gets reset after a new windshield. Every time.
Back and side glass
Break-ins and hail. We replace the glass and vacuum up the little cubes.
Hail damage
A couple of dings can be repaired. A windshield full of them gets replaced.

We come to you
Most of our work happens in driveways and parking lots, not in a shop. Your house, your office, the lot at your kid's practice. If the car's parked, we can usually work on it.
All we need is a parking space with a little room on each side and dry glass. If it's snowing or pouring, a garage or a carport works. Otherwise we'll move you to the next decent day.
Hail season is the worst
From May through August, a storm can come off the plains and take out a windshield in a minute flat. If it happens to you, call early. After a big storm every glass shop on the Front Range is booked up for a week or two, us included.
What to do after hailRepair or replace?
We'd rather repair it if we can. It's cheaper for you, it's faster, and it keeps the original factory seal, which is the one that never leaks. Here's roughly how we decide:
- Smaller than a quarter? Usually repairable.
- A crack shorter than a dollar bill? Sometimes repairable.
- Right in front of the driver? Replace. A repair always leaves a little mark, and you don't want it in your line of sight.
- Touching the edge of the glass? Replace. Edge cracks keep running no matter what you fill them with.
- Three or four chips in the same area? Replace. At that point you're looking through more repairs than glass.
If yours is a repair, we'll tell you, even though a new windshield pays us more.
How a replacement goes
- You call. Tell us the year, make and model, read us the VIN if you can find it (bottom corner of the windshield on the driver's side), and tell us where the car's parked.
- We show up. Usually the same day or the next morning. We cover the hood and the dash before we touch anything.
- The old glass comes out. Wipers, cowl and trim come off, the old glue gets cut, and the glass lifts out.
- We prep the frame. This is the part that matters most. Old glue trimmed down, any rust treated, primer on. Skip it and a new windshield can leak in a year or two.
- New glass goes in. Fresh bead of urethane, glass set straight, trim and wipers back on. If your car has a lane-assist camera, we recalibrate it.
- Let it set. You can drive in about one to three hours, depending on the weather. Leave the tape on for a day and skip the car wash for two.
Questions people ask us
Can I fix a chip myself?
You can try a kit from the parts store on a small, fresh chip, and sometimes they work fine. The catch is that a bad DIY repair leaves air and cheap resin in the chip, and then we can't fix it properly afterward. A new windshield is never a DIY job. It's glued into the car's frame and it helps hold the roof up.
Is a crack really a big deal?
More than most people think. Cracks spread fast here because of how much the temperature swings. The windshield also helps keep the roof from caving in during a rollover, and the passenger airbag pushes off of it. If the crack is in your line of sight or touches an edge, get it looked at this week.
Can I get a ticket for a cracked windshield?
You can. Colorado doesn't do yearly safety inspections, but an officer can write you up if a crack blocks your view of the road. It can come up when you sell the car, too.
Do I need a permit or anything?
Nope. There are no permits or inspections for auto glass. The only paperwork is your insurance claim, if you file one.
How long does it take?
A chip repair is 20 to 30 minutes. A replacement is about an hour to an hour and a half, plus one to three hours before it's safe to drive while the glue sets up. Add a little time if your car's camera needs recalibrating.
Will insurance pay for it?
Glass usually falls under the comprehensive part of your policy. Some people have full glass coverage with no deductible, and a lot of insurers pay for chip repairs completely. Check your policy or ask your agent. We can bill most insurance companies directly, and you get to pick who does the work, not your insurer.
Are you licensed and insured?
Colorado doesn't license auto glass installers, so there's no license number to look up. We carry liability insurance and we'll show you the certificate before we start if you ask. You should ask anyone who works on your car for the same thing.
Does my car need a recalibration?
If it has lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise or automatic emergency braking, there's a camera behind the windshield, and yes, it does. When the glass moves, the camera's aim moves with it. We'll check your VIN and tell you before we book anything.
